Strengthening of leadership skills is a must
In recent years, companies have increasingly relied on agile or other more flexible project management methods for their change plans. What does this mean for project managers?
In recent years, companies have increasingly relied on agile or other more flexible project management methods for their change plans. The agile approach has consequences beyond the project. Often a new dynamic is created in the entire organization. By applying methods such as Design Thinking or the use of the SAFE Framework, entire company departments are realigned. The goal is to create products that reach the customer faster and that meet his requirements. This increases the competitiveness of the company on the market.
Delivery responsibility, internal and external adaptation
What does this mean for the project manager in such a company? Here I see three topics that need to be considered:
Delivery responsibility remains the key objective
His main task is still to deliver "his" project within the triad of time, cost and quality.
Reinforce internal adaptation (into the project)
Even more than in the past, agile projects require a continuous adaptation of the project processes to the needs of the project. The artifacts from sprints, scrum meetings, MVP's etc. have a direct influence on project control
External adaptation is becoming increasingly important
As the main representative of "his" project, the project manager is responsible for ensuring that his project adapts and adapts to the ongoing changes in the company's strategy, finances, processes and products. For example, he must ensure that the results of Big Room Planning are continuously incorporated into his planning.
The role Project Manager evolves
I am of the opinion that especially in agile structures and projects the role of the project manager is developing. As a representative of the project, especially externally, he becomes a coach and change manager. He must constantly adapt his own project and at the same time keep it in line with changes in the company. In my opinion it is important that he still masters the classic PM tools (e.g. PMI). Even more, they are more important than ever. Professional risk management, a clear relationship with stakeholders through continuous communication and efficient cost control. These are the prerequisites for bringing a project to a successful conclusion.
Strengthening leadership skills is a must
What does this mean for the leadership competence of a project manager? Classically, project managers operate in a matrix organization. They do not lead hierarchically as line managers. Transparency, strategic foresight and setting a good example have always been typical characteristics of a professional project manager, but they are now in focus. Negotiating skills in dealing with stakeholders are a must.
The role is evolvling. The competencies of a good project manager remain important. But the focus is increasingly on leadership, strategy and risk management.
